Community Power Events
Community Power Events are a quick, enjoyable, successful way to
consult or generate ideas. By engaging everyone equally these events
provide a positive, dynamic process identifying the key issues and ways
forward to achieve change.
Tailored to your specific requirements Community Power Events can run in a number of
ways from a couple of hours to half a day. The important thing is that they are enjoyable
whilst engaging everyone - from as few as 10 to about 50 or more people.
There isn't a typical event but key elements include:
- Some quick ice breakers.
- A run through the ground rules and an intro about the issues
- Then it's time to think about the future scenario- set as if the outcome has already
been achieved.
- Then we move into any one of a number of approaches - 'voting with your feet'
'brainstorming' 'clustering' 'group discussions' 'plenary discussions' 'café debate'
'open space' 'drop-in/drop-out activities' and 'graffiti wall' .
- Actions, prioritising and evaluation conclude the event
The big advantage of Community Power Events are that they are a quick, easy and
enjoyable way of engaging people and everyone's ideas carry equal weight. Importantly the
quieter participants are able to see their thoughts count as much as the more vocal ones!
The approach can also be used for internal issues facing an organisation.
Over 94% of Participants at events I've led have rated my performance as good or excellent
and I often achieve the magic 100%.
For some events I team up with Independent Thinking. For over ten years Independent
Thinking has been working to bring the best out of young people and those who work with
them, focusing on areas including thinking, learning, motivation and creativity. To check
